CIMA CERTIFICATE IN BUSINESS ACCOUNTING QUALIFICATION
The Certificate in Business Accounting is CIMA’s entry level accounting qualification for students with little or no accounting background.
The certificate level gives you business experience beyond just financial accounting and you’ll gain insight into how the different areas of accounting relate to the business world.
It can be seen as a knowledge refresher course or a foundation to a career in business and finance. The Certificate in Business Accounting forms the basis of the CIMA Professional Qualification and is a valuable qualification on its own.
After passing all four exams you are awarded the Certificate in Business Accounting qualification. You can then proceed to the CIMA Professional Qualification, starting at the operational level.
STRUCTURE OF THE CIMA CERTIFICATE IN BUSINESS ACCOUNTING QUALIFICATION
The Certificate in Business Accounting syllabus contains four subjects, each with its own examination.
It forms the basis of the CIMA Professional Qualification.
CIMA PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATION
On completion of the CIMA Professional Qualification, you will be awarded the Chartered Global Management Accountant (CGMA) designation, recognising your value and showcasing your professionalism, business and leadership skills, ethics and commitment.
As accountants in business, management accountants need to understand how businesses operate, how they are managed, how people work together and how strategy is formulated.
They also need to be able to provide the analysis which managers need to understand the economics of a businesses’ operations, to manage performance and to manage risk. These capabilities are in addition to the core technical financial accounting skills expected of a professional accountant.
Only the CIMA Professional Qualification can give you the right mix of skills, knowledge and experience needed add value to organisations and drive business success.
The syllabus is split into three pillars and three levels, and comprises 12 exams: nine Objective Tests, and three Case Study exams.
You are an undergraduate or graduate
You may be eligible for exemptions from some CIMA exams, depending on the degree you hold or are studying for.
If you hold an MBA or Master’s in Accounting, you may be eligible for our Master’s gateway route.
You may be eligible for exemptions from the CIMA Certificate in Business Accounting or from certain exams within the CIMA Professional Qualification if you hold or are studying for:
– A degree accredited by CIMA
– A degree related to accounting, business, finance or law
If you have a degree in another discipline, you start by studying the CIMA Certificate in Business Accounting, which will give you a solid grounding in the fundamentals of accounting. You then progress to the CIMA Professional Qualification with all the knowledge you need to succeed.

If you have no formal education in business or finance, you will start by studying the CIMA Certificate in Business Accounting, which will give you a solid grounding in the fundamentals of management accounting. You can study it as a stand-alone qualification or as a stepping stone to the CIMA Professional Qualification.

As a member of another professional body, you may be eligible for a fast track route into the CIMA qualification.
IFAC bodies – members and passed finalists
If you are a member or passed finalist of an IFAC body, you may be eligible for advanced entry to CIMA through the professional gateway route.
